Some Eldorado residents just can’t stay away from La Tienda. They visit everyday – doing a bit of window shopping and picking up a snack or two.
This may be our State Bird, but I have lived here for 14 years and my yard is locally known among birds as a 4 Star resort, yet I have never had the close encounters with Roadrunners that I have at La Tienda. They’re just strolling around – like everyone else.
Roadrunners are best known for the fact that they prefer to walk or run (up to 17mph) rather than fly, and that they are brave enough (and fast enough) to consider a rattlesnake dinner.
Using its wings like a matador’s cape, the Roadrunner swoops up a coiled rattlesnake by the tail and snaps it like a whip, hitting its head on the ground until the grizzly deed is done.
I think I could skip being around for that event. How about you?
