Literary and Performing Arts come to La Tienda
As part of our ongoing efforts to support artists and promote a gathering rich with creative juices, we are beginning to incorporate the arts across multiple disciplines.
On November 15 at 10 am in The Performance Space, we welcome Santa Fe Improv at La Tienda. Santa Fe Improv is offering a free class for seniors (55 and above) who want to try their hand at this incredibly fun and creative expression. The free class will be followed by a regular class schedule.
On November 16 at 6:30pm in The Performance Space, join us for a reading by published poets and fiction writers. There is a suggested entrance fee of $2 (but if you can’t afford it, it’s ok).
On December 1 at 5:30 pm at Destiny Allison Fine Art, photographer and publisher Eric Swanson will present a free talk on creative economy and how artists can create an income stream in this challenging time.
Coming soon, La Tienda will launch it’s independent film series. Some good people have stepped forward to steer this initiative but could use some help. If you are interested in helping to support independent film makers and their films, call Destiny at (505) 428-0024.
La Tienda is committed to being more than a shopping center. It’s goals are to build community and to promote artists as well as the work they produce. Emerging artists and established artists need a place where they are valued as much as the work they do. Santa Fe is home to thousands of artists but there are few places where they can get together, learn from each other, and participate in an environment that is engaging, stimulating and diverse. La Tienda is that place!

Cartridges for Kids a huge success
The Cartridges for Kids program is much more successful than we had anticipated. People are bringing in empty inks and toners from both home and work. Our original goal was to raise between $1200 and $1500 for the school but the community has been bringing in cartridges so often that it appears we will raise over $3000 for school supplies this year.
Last month, we filled the back of a mini van with markers, glue sticks, tissue paper, regular paper, binders and notebooks. This month, and next, we are using the funds to supply teachers with 8 gig flash drives. Teachers use the drives to store assignments, move data, and communicate with each other. They are a vital tool for teachers to be effective in their jobs.
More importantly, teachers are not paying for these supplies out of their own pockets — as was customary prior to the program. If you have empty ink cartridges or toners, please drop them off at La Tienda. There are two drop off areas in the shopping center. One is in front of Urban Fix Cafe and the other is in front of Eldorado Computer Works.
EX EX VI at the La Tienda Exhibit Space
EX.EX.:
Excerpt Exhibition
The sixth annual EX.EX.: Excerpt Exhibition will be presented at the La Tienda Exhibit Space in Eldorado during the month of October, 2011. The invitational will present 35 local artists, who individually exemplify un-common interests, sensibilities, and notions about ART, and its practice. Some are emerging in their homes & are new to exhibitions; some are students; some are everyday artists…doing their things; some are internationally renowned; all are pushed, pulled, and motivated by a “feeling”–a longing–which never goes, away! “They rock”…in their own world! For these reasons, each has been invited to select & show two pieces in EX.EX. VI ! The criteria is established by artist/professor, Dean Howell…who writes:

Artistic Existence
There’s an artistic soul, an artistic process, and an artistic object. Inherent to them all, is artistic existence. The EX.EX. concept is about honoring the fact that at the end of the day-everyday-there are those who find themselves pursuing this existence, sometimes unknowingly…and there are those who simply embody it-whether they intend to or not…whether they’re judged good at it or not.
EX.EX. VI: Excerpt Exhibition presents artists, who are… to the side, underneath, and over the top of normal levels of soul, process, and objectified existence. We need to study them hard.

Dixon Apple Orchard Benefit
As you may be aware, on the morning of June 27, 2011, Dixon’s Apple Orchard, exclusive growers of the Champagne Apple, and a beloved New Mexico tradition since 1944, was devastated by the Los Conchas Wildfire. The family home, storage facilities and essential equipment were destroyed.
A about a month ago we recieved a call from someone that wanted to help, to do something to help this family. That call started what seems like another wild fire. Individuals, community groups and businesses are coming together to create a fundraising benefit to help a really wonderful family.
Come join us Saturday, August 27th from 12pm to 6 pm at La Tienda for the Benefit for the Mullane Family, owners of the Dixon’s Apple Orchard. Click Here for a google map to La Tienda.
This will be a fun family day for everyone. There will be a Raffle and Silent Auction, put-put golf, horseshoes, games, classic cars, bike rodeo, horse rides for the littler kids, food and drink, music, clowns, yoga, spinning classes, and so much more.
