Directed by Santa Fe resident Paul Marcus “Mercurial Son” follows for three years the musical and personal journey of Lurrie Bell, son of famed Chicago bluesman Carrie Bell. Initially hailed as a musical genius, Lurrie’s career was derailed early on by bouts of mental illness, addiction and homelessness, until an extraordinary young photographer, Susan Greenberg, came into his life. Over time, Susan and Lurrie formed a deep bond and struggled together to keep their careers and daily lives from imploding. Shot over three years and filled with sublime guitar playing, “Mercurial Son” is a testament to the raw power of blues music and the lives that live it. Director Paul Marcus will discuss the film following its showing.

“The Astronomer’s Sun,” an animated short directed, written and produced by Peter M. Kershaw, tells the story of Henry who, with his mysterious mechanical bear, visits an abandoned observatory to confront his past and follow his father on a journey into the unknown. The film has been honored in seventeen festivals. Peter Kershaw, who is adjunct professor for directors and producers at Santa Fe Community College, will discuss the film following its showing.  Proceeds from the $5 suggested at the door go to meet expenses and to participating filmmakers for ongoing projects.

On Thursday, April 5th, 2012 at 6:00 p.m., a multimedia presentation entitled Barbarians at the Gate – Stravinsky, Diaghilev & the Ballets Russes, narrated by Tom Maguire, will be offered free to the general public at the Performance Space at La Tienda at 7 Caliente Road in Eldorado. This event is presented by Destiny Allison Fine Art as part of the salon series: Art in the 21st Century. 

This presentation will offer a detailed look at the time between the first season of Serge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1909 and Diaghilev’s death in Venice two decades later. Mr. Maguire will examine the artistic forces and personalities that forged a reinvigoration of the art of ballet. The presentation will also explore the effect that the visual artists, composers, librettists, choreographers, dancers and designers associated with the Ballets Russes had, not only on that organization, but also on their own art forms and the cultural life of Europe in general. The presentation will concentrate on the work of composers Stravinsky, Ravel, Milhaud, Satie, Debussy and Prokofiev; visual artists Benois, Picasso, Rouault, Gris, Picabia, Bakst and Braque and choreographers Fokine, Massine, Nijinsky, Nijinska and Balanchine. These artists and their influence on the artistic life of Europe, in general, and Paris, in particular, will be chronicled; along with the aristocrats, members of high society and the business class, donors and sponsors who made their work possible. 

Mr. Maguire augments the research he has done on the Ballets Russes with material gleaned from the most recent publications on the subject. Visual and musical materials are selected from several sources including Mr. Maguire’s extensive collection. Barbarians at the Gate dramatically explores the artistic explosion that Serge Diaghilev unleashed on Western Europe as he brought; first visual arts, then opera and finally ballet from mother Russia to the salons and theatres of Paris. In stunning visuals accompanied by music clips, Barbarians at the Gate traces not only the history of the company, but also its effect on all of the arts in the early 20th century.

Join us Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 10:00am-4:00pm

for the Summer Camp Fair at La Tienda. 

15 local children’s camps will set up displays, information and activities for the children ofSanta Fe. We have a wide variety of camps participating. There are art, gymnastics, horse riding, language, living history, performing arts, science, and sports camps for ages preschool through middle school. Camp displays will be set up indoors and outdoors and children can have their faces painted, make spin art, play sports (including soccer and tennis), try tumbling, participate in living history, and try out fun activities that are as yet undisclosed. While children are sampling the activities parents can talk to camp personnel and collect information. 

This is a free event. Our goal is to bring the families ofSanta Feand the summer camps ofSanta Fetogether early enough make summer plans. A fun day for the children is an added bonus. 

A big thank you to La Tienda for providing the venue for the Summer Camp Fair, to Listening Horse Therapeutic Riding for sponsoring the Summer Camp Fair, to Steve Ewers for printing and donating 11,000 (!) fliers which were distributed to the school children of Santa Fe and to Mekah Gordon for delivering at least half of those fliers to the schools, designing the signs and banners for the Summer Camp Fair and for the many other things she has been willing to do, often at a moments notice.

The forum format will consist of 4 workshops; solar photovoltaics (PV), solar thermal, solar financing and cost benefits, and conservation and usage. Each workshop will be facilitated by specialists in that respective field and will be 45 minutes in duration. Forum attendees can choose any two workshops to attend. After the workshops, the workshop leaders will participate on a panel where they will answers questions from the audience.

Eldorado has an amazing history as a solar community. As we look ahead, we have many great opportunities to move from passive to active solar. The upcoming Solar Forum will help inform and equip Eldorado area residents as we take steps to become more sustainable, more energy independent and to save some green as we GO GREEN!
