Sarah Berges Dance will join selected Santa Fe dancers to perform a new work choreographed by Sarah Berges entitled “Repeating the Past.” In response to the magnificent new sculpture by Dee Homans, on display in The Exhibit Space at La TIenda (2/18-3/11), the dance reflects the aggressive power of the sculpture in contrast to its undulating, lyric subtext. Ancient memories of the Medea story rise and fall in the dance, a touchstone for reflecting on modern day acts of vengeance and of violence used against innocents. SARAH BERGES DANCE will also perform “Vignettes” – small dances at odd times – in The Exhibit Space at La Tienda. These 4 minute dances will be performed once a day, Wednesday 2/22 through Saturday 2/25 (call 310-403-9983 for precise times.) Admission to the “Vignettes” is free of charge.
Based in Oakland California, Sarah Berges has been producing dance since 1984. During the 15 years she spent in Los Angeles (1996-2011) Ms. Berges founded a modern dance company and a ballet company. Her companies have performed in Mexico, Costa Rica, San Francisco, the Los Angeles area and New York City.
Recipient of grants from Culver City, SONY Pictures, the Puffin Foundation and Squid & Squash Foundation, Ms. Berges has used grant money to produce dance in public, outdoor spaces. Her “Adventure In Wonderland” attracted large audiences at Culver City Park and charmed students at Los Angeles middle schools.
Sarah Berges’ choreography springs from her childhood training in improvisation and choreography. Ms. Berges’ lifetime in dance – performing, teaching, and exploring movement – culminates in a choreographic style that is classically patterned yet full of twists and turns. Always intent on telling a story, her dances are informed by a graphic sensibility bolstered by raw emotion.
Building Community: Women’s Coffee and Conversation
You are invited to join us on Sunday, January 29 at 2pm for a coffee and some great conversation. This event is facilitated by Christine Wagner and Karen Hodges and will take place at Destiny Allison Fine Art. Read on to understand why this coffee is happening and what it is about:
Dear Destiny,
Congratulations to you in the achievement of the 2011 Businesswoman of the Year award!
We are especially intrigued by your comment about your contribution – “I do what I do because it is the Work I do that feeds my soul.” Far too many women do not have an inkling what that may be for them. Women’s work sometimes can seem very far from the “capital W” Work that refers to a life calling or purpose. Our strengths, our talents, the gifts that light us up seem to remain dormant in the face of the “shoulds” – no, the “musts” – that represent our world. Why?
We are the mothers, the daughters, the housewives, the caretakers. We bring groceries and meals to neighbors who are ill or unable to prepare meals for themselves. This is our work, and perhaps we also do “work” that helps pay the bills…but how much of this work is respected in today’s society?
We are creating the 21st century roadmap for all women. And there is no roadmap to adulthood for our daughters to follow.
What can we do to trust our unique voice as women and see its importance to the business community and the world at large? What are the gifts and talents that women bring to the table both in business and in our communities? How can we discern our voice as women, individually and collectively?
What message is the media transmitting to our daughters? Feminist thinking is clear that women are much more than one-dimensionally defined sex symbols. Our daughters see images of scantily clad women flaunting their bodies. The message is consistent and repetitive, but untrue. A woman’s sexual self is NOT the only real power women have.
What can we do as women to claim our powers of collaboration; authentic and reflective listening; responsiveness and attunement? The virtues of feminist thinking are widely known and appreciated. At the world peace summit in Vancouver in 2009, the Dalai Lama proclaimed that the world will be saved by the Western woman. How can claiming our own voices and power have world impact? And how can we include our young girls and teenagers to sustain it?
We are energized by the opening your award and response have created — and find the dialogue rich and multi-faceted. We welcome being part of this conversation, hearing the voices and insights of women in our community.
FREE SCREENING OF “THRIVE — WHAT ON EARTH WILL IT TAKE”

(This event will begin at approximately 4 pm for those who are not attending the film)

The top one percent of Americans controls 42% of the wealth in our country and the gap between rich and poor is the largest in history. What has happened to the Middle Class? Two women who will speak have homes now in the foreclosure process here in Eldorado The Occupy Santa Fe movement has been “The Movement different”: no violence … no rioting … great cooperation with the Police and mayor’s office. There are many plans for Occupy 2012 and, there are other people and other movements which are beginning to address the issues of greed, corruption and wealth buying the justice and political systems. You will be able to ask questions, offer comments (good or bad) and find out some way to stand-up for your beliefs. For information contact cscot@comcast.net
Holiday Celebration on Saturday, December 17
Two great art openings this weekend
On December 10, from 5 – 7 pm, join Destiny Allison Fine Art as we welcome renowned jeweler, Cynthia Jones.
Destiny Allison Fine Art gallery is holding a jewelry trunk show, featuring the work of jeweler Cynthia Jones. There is an understated feminine certitude to the delicately fashioned jewelry of Cynthia Jones. Her hand-crafted pieces are very contemporary, and convey a sense of unfettered spatiality, accomplished by just the right amount of strength built into the construct of her designs. The work is a reflection of Cynthia herself, an artist whose confidence in her own abilities and engineering sense has set her imagination free.
Cynthia received a B.S. in Metalsmithing/Jewelry from Southern Connecticut State University, afterwards entering a two-year apprenticeship with a jeweler where she honed her technical and business skills. Her signature CJJ line of work is found in stores and galleries across the country.
Cynthia will have a large collection of her surprisingly affordable work at the trunk show, and mention this newsletter to receive a 10% discount on all the items she brings. To view Cynthia’s full collection of earrings, bracelets, neck pieces and rings, go to www.cynthiajonesjewelry.com
Also on Saturday, December 10, join The Exhibit Space in welcoming Visual Synergy.
Literary and Performing Arts come to La Tienda
As part of our ongoing efforts to support artists and promote a gathering rich with creative juices, we are beginning to incorporate the arts across multiple disciplines.
On November 15 at 10 am in The Performance Space, we welcome Santa Fe Improv at La Tienda. Santa Fe Improv is offering a free class for seniors (55 and above) who want to try their hand at this incredibly fun and creative expression. The free class will be followed by a regular class schedule.
On November 16 at 6:30pm in The Performance Space, join us for a reading by published poets and fiction writers. There is a suggested entrance fee of $2 (but if you can’t afford it, it’s ok).
On December 1 at 5:30 pm at Destiny Allison Fine Art, photographer and publisher Eric Swanson will present a free talk on creative economy and how artists can create an income stream in this challenging time.
Coming soon, La Tienda will launch it’s independent film series. Some good people have stepped forward to steer this initiative but could use some help. If you are interested in helping to support independent film makers and their films, call Destiny at (505) 428-0024.
La Tienda is committed to being more than a shopping center. It’s goals are to build community and to promote artists as well as the work they produce. Emerging artists and established artists need a place where they are valued as much as the work they do. Santa Fe is home to thousands of artists but there are few places where they can get together, learn from each other, and participate in an environment that is engaging, stimulating and diverse. La Tienda is that place!

Cartridges for Kids a huge success
The Cartridges for Kids program is much more successful than we had anticipated. People are bringing in empty inks and toners from both home and work. Our original goal was to raise between $1200 and $1500 for the school but the community has been bringing in cartridges so often that it appears we will raise over $3000 for school supplies this year.
Last month, we filled the back of a mini van with markers, glue sticks, tissue paper, regular paper, binders and notebooks. This month, and next, we are using the funds to supply teachers with 8 gig flash drives. Teachers use the drives to store assignments, move data, and communicate with each other. They are a vital tool for teachers to be effective in their jobs.
More importantly, teachers are not paying for these supplies out of their own pockets — as was customary prior to the program. If you have empty ink cartridges or toners, please drop them off at La Tienda. There are two drop off areas in the shopping center. One is in front of Urban Fix Cafe and the other is in front of Eldorado Computer Works.
